Wnt-signaling in HSCs upon aging

Ageing of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) is associated with impaired haematopoiesis in the elderly. Despite a large amount of data describing the decline of HSC function upon ageing, the molecular mechanisms of this process remain still largely unknown, which precludes rational approaches to attenuate stem cell ageing.
The shift from canonical to non canonical Wnt5a signaling: upon aging the hematopoietic system shifts from a mainly canonical to a mainly non canonical Wnt pathway (decrease in ╬▓-catenin and Axin-2 levels); changes in Notch signaling pathway are also involved (cross-talk between Wnt and Notch pathway).
